The disciples often misunderstood Jesus’ parables because the spiritual truths they contained were hidden to those who lacked spiritual discernment. Jesus explained that He spoke in parables to reveal truth to those with faith and to conceal it from those with hardened hearts:
“To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.” (Matthew 13:11)
Even though the disciples followed Jesus, they still struggled to grasp the full meaning of His teachings. After one parable, Jesus said:
“Are you also still without understanding?” (Matthew 15:16)
Their misunderstandings were rooted in several issues:
- They were still learning to think spiritually rather than naturally.
- They were influenced by expectations of a political Messiah.
- They lacked the full revelation that would come through the Holy Spirit.
Jesus often explained the parables privately to the disciples:
“And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.” (Mark 4:34)
This demonstrates His patience and the progressive nature of their spiritual growth. Their confusion was not final, but part of their learning process.
After Jesus’ resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, their understanding increased dramatically:
“Then He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:45)
The disciples’ early misunderstandings serve to remind believers that spiritual truths require spiritual discernment, which comes through humility, faith, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
