What is the unforgivable sin?

The unforgivable sin, also known as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, is the deliberate and final rejection of the Holy Spirit’s testimony about Jesus Christ. Jesus addressed this sin in the context of the Pharisees attributing His miracles to Satan:

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.” (Matthew 12:31)

“Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.” (Matthew 12:32)

The Pharisees had witnessed undeniable miracles done by the power of the Holy Spirit, yet they willfully called it the work of Satan. Their hearts were hardened, and they rejected the clear evidence of Christ’s identity.

This sin is not a careless word or moment of doubt, it is a persistent, willful refusal to believe in the face of undeniable truth. Hebrews warns:

“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened… if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance.” (Hebrews 6:4–6)

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not a single act but a hardened condition, a complete rejection of God’s revelation and grace. It is the only sin that cannot be forgiven because the person rejects the very means of forgiveness.

Jesus came to save sinners, and no sin is beyond forgiveness if a person repents and believes. But those who resist the Spirit and attribute His work to evil show a heart that has fully turned against God.

“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)
