What does the Bible say about the widow’s mite?

The widow’s mite is a powerful lesson on true giving and heartfelt worship. It is recorded in Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4, where Jesus observed people putting money into the treasury. Many rich men gave much, but a poor widow came and put in two small coins, known as mites. These were the smallest denomination of currency in use at the time.

Jesus called His disciples and said, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood” (Mark 12:43-44).

The value was not in the amount, but in the sacrifice. God does not measure giving by earthly standards but by the heart. This woman’s offering was an act of trust, surrender, and worship. She gave to God what she could not afford to keep, revealing greater faith than those who gave what they would not miss.

This moment illustrates a key biblical truth: God values sincere devotion over outward display. 2 Corinthians 9:7 affirms, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”

The widow’s mite continues to remind believers that the smallest act of faith, done in obedience and love, is precious in the sight of God.
