What does the Bible say about lilies?

Lilies in the Bible are used as symbols of beauty, purity, provision, and the fleeting nature of life. They appear in both poetic and instructional passages, often to teach spiritual truths about God’s care and the heart of man.

One of the most well-known references comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 6:28–30, He says:

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”

Jesus uses lilies to illustrate how God clothes the earth with beauty and sustains it without human effort. The point is clear, if God so cares for the grass and flowers, He will certainly provide for His people. It is a rebuke to worry and a call to trust in divine provision.

Lilies also appear in the Song of Solomon, symbolizing beauty and intimacy. Song of Solomon 2:1–2 says:

“I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. Like a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.”

Here, the lily becomes an image of unique and delicate beauty, highlighting the affection between bride and bridegroom. Some interpret this spiritually to represent Christ and His love for the Church.

The lily is also used in temple design. 1 Kings 7:19,22,26 mentions lilies as decorative features in Solomon’s temple, symbolizing purity and sacredness in the house of God.

Lilies, in their elegance and fragility, teach that God delights in beauty, provides for His creation, and invites us to trust Him rather than be anxious about our needs.
