What does the Bible say about knowledge?

Biblical knowledge is the understanding of truth as revealed by God. It is more than information, it involves knowing God personally and applying His Word in obedience and faith.

The Bible distinguishes between worldly knowledge, which often leads to pride, and godly knowledge, which leads to wisdom and righteousness. Proverbs 1:7 says:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Knowledge starts with a right relationship with God. Without that foundation, all other understanding is shallow and ultimately useless. Hosea 4:6 warns:

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you…”

This verse highlights the danger of rejecting the knowledge of God’s law and truth. True knowledge involves hearing, believing, and obeying God’s Word.

The Scriptures also teach that knowledge must be tempered with love. 1 Corinthians 8:1 reminds believers:

“Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.”

While knowledge is good and commanded, it must be used to build others up and glorify God, not to exalt oneself.

Paul prayed that believers would grow in spiritual knowledge. Colossians 1:9 says:

“We… do not cease to pray for you… that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”

This kind of knowledge leads to a life that pleases God, bears fruit, and increases in strength and endurance.

Biblical knowledge, then, is not an end in itself but a tool to know God better, live rightly, and teach others. It must always be grounded in Scripture, shaped by the fear of the Lord, and exercised with humility and love.
