What does the Bible say about hauntings?

The Bible does not teach that dead people return to haunt the living. What many describe as “hauntings”, unexplained noises, apparitions, or supernatural disturbances, are not caused by the spirits of the deceased. According to Scripture, the dead do not return to their earthly homes. Job 7:10 says:

“He shall never return to his house, nor shall his place know him anymore.”

Ecclesiastes 9:5–6 confirms this further:

“The dead know nothing… nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.”

What people interpret as hauntings are either natural occurrences misidentified or demonic manifestations designed to deceive, instill fear, or draw people into forbidden spiritual practices. Satan and his demons can manipulate the physical world and present counterfeit experiences. 2 Corinthians 11:14 warns:

“For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”

The Bible associates such activity with unclean spirits, not departed souls. Any spiritual presence that disturbs or terrorizes is not from God. God is not the author of confusion, but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).

Some who encounter so-called hauntings are tempted to seek answers through mediums, psychics, or paranormal investigators. These actions open the door further to demonic influence and are condemned by God (Leviticus 19:31).

The solution is not to investigate the disturbance but to turn fully to the Lord Jesus Christ. Believers have authority through Him to reject and remove unclean spirits. James 4:7 gives the directive:

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Hauntings are not innocent or entertaining. They are either natural misunderstandings or manifestations of spiritual darkness, both of which must be met with truth, prayer, and full reliance on the Lord.
