What does the Bible say about Ezra reading the Law?

Ezra reading the Law is a pivotal moment in Israel’s post-exilic restoration and spiritual renewal. This event took place after the return from Babylonian captivity and highlights the importance of God’s Word in reviving a nation.

In Nehemiah 8, the people gathered “as one man” in the open square before the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses. Nehemiah 8:2–3 describes the scene:

“So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly… and he read from it… from morning until midday… and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.”

Ezra stood on a wooden platform with others beside him, and when he opened the book, the people stood in reverence. Nehemiah 8:6 says:

“And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. Then all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen!’… and they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.”

Levites helped explain the reading so that the people could understand. As they grasped the meaning of God’s commands, they began to weep. But Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites instructed them not to mourn but to rejoice:

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

The next day, the leaders gathered again to study the Law, and they discovered the command to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. The people obeyed, building booths and keeping the feast as it had not been done since the days of Joshua.

Nehemiah 8:8 summarizes the heart of the event:

“So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.”

This account reveals that revival begins with a return to God’s Word. Ezra’s faithful reading led to understanding, conviction, obedience, and joy. It remains a model for spiritual leadership and biblical discipleship.
