What does the Bible say about evil spirits?

Evil spirits are described throughout Scripture as unclean, malicious entities that oppose God and afflict mankind. They are often used interchangeably with the term “demons,” and their work is always destructive, deceptive, and defiling.

In the Old Testament, the phrase “evil spirit” appears multiple times. For example, in 1 Samuel 16:14:

“But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.”

This “evil spirit” did not originate in God but was permitted by Him for judgment or correction. God does not create evil, but He can allow evil spirits to operate for His sovereign purposes (see also Judges 9:23).

Evil spirits are shown to influence thought, cause fear, stir confusion, and even torment physically and emotionally. In the New Testament, they are frequently cast out by Christ and His apostles. Luke 8:2 mentions:

“And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons.”

These spirits are intelligent and active, often working in groups (Mark 5:9) and targeting individuals to destroy, possess, or oppress them. Their influence can affect minds, emotions, and even bodily function.

The only remedy for deliverance is through Jesus Christ. Evil spirits are powerless against the authority of His name when used by a true believer. Luke 10:17 records:

“Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’”

The Bible gives no instruction to communicate with or confront evil spirits apart from the context of direct deliverance in Jesus’ name. Christians are to resist the devil, not engage him. Protection comes from walking in righteousness, submission to God, and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
