Should Christians use birth control?

The Bible does not specifically mention birth control, so Christians must apply biblical principles to make wise and godly decisions. The first command God gave humanity was to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), and children are described as a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). Therefore, any decision to prevent pregnancy must be made with a heart that honors life and seeks God’s will.

Psalm 127:3 says:

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.”

Married couples must evaluate their motives. Are they avoiding children for selfish reasons, materialism, or fear? Or are they prayerfully considering their ability to raise children in the Lord at a given time?

Proverbs 3:5–6 instructs:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

Some forms of birth control may act after fertilization, potentially ending a human life. Any method that destroys a fertilized egg should be rejected, as life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13–16). Others that prevent fertilization may be morally acceptable if used with prayerful conviction and mutual agreement in marriage.

1 Corinthians 7:5 emphasizes marital unity:

“Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time… and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you.”

Christian couples should not make decisions about birth control casually or based on worldly thinking. They must seek God’s wisdom, remain open to life, and ensure their conscience is clear before Him (Romans 14:23).

Ultimately, the decision is personal, but it must be guided by Scripture, prayer, and a desire to glorify God in all things, including family planning.
