Christians must be discerning in every area of life, including entertainment. While the Bible does not directly address video games, it gives clear principles for evaluating what we allow into our minds and hearts.
Philippians 4:8 sets the standard:
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure… meditate on these things.”
Violent video games often glorify killing, revenge, hatred, and other works of the flesh. Galatians 5:19–21 lists these as sinful behaviors:
“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication… hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath…”
Christians are called to put off the old man and walk in newness of life. Ephesians 4:22–24 says:
“That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt… and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”
While not every game is inherently sinful, those that encourage or normalize violence, vulgar speech, or ungodly attitudes should be avoided. 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us:
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Time is also a factor. Ephesians 5:15–16 warns:
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time…”
Christians should ask: Does this game glorify God? Does it harden my heart toward sin or make me numb to evil? Does it help me grow spiritually or pull me away from Christ?
Romans 12:2 gives the foundation:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
Violent entertainment is often a tool of the world to desensitize and corrupt. Christians are called to be separate and holy.
Playing violent video games may seem harmless, but it shapes the mind and spirit. Christians should be intentional and holy in all choices, especially those that influence their thinking and behavior.
